Peonies

This scarf is the replica of a shawl kerchief with a black, so-called "ramoneur"(chimney sweep) ground. It is quite remarkable in that it includes a leader-cloth. Leader cloths bearing the printworks mark were printed at both ends of the web before it was sent to market. They originally required by the customs authorities, but gradually came to play the same role as our modern trademarks. This particular shawl kerchief was manufactured by the Eck, Dollfus et Huguenin printworks that was in Cernay, about twenty kilometers from Mulhouse. Through its leader cloth, this small shawl provides a glimps at a whole world of relationships binding the calico printers of Mulhouse and the rest of Alsace into a dense network of industrial dynasties and shared financial interests. This small shawl was blocked printed on cotton.

100% cotton, 1110x110cm, 41
