Floral Jouy
This is the re-issue of
a shawl kerchief
printed by the
Oberkampf manufacture in Jouy-en-Josas, near Paris.
The company was founded in 1760 and rapidly became
one of the largest calico printworks of the 18th
century. It's fame among historians of the
decorative arts is owing to its typically monochrome
cottons printed with red or purple figures referred
to as Toile de Jouy regardless of where it
was actually made. They were famous but only a small
part of the production. The 18th century was a
period eager to display its interest in nature.
Floral prints were rendered realistically, as they
might have appeared in a botanical hand book. A
study in natural history as well as a
statement about beauty. The flowers are skilfully
arranged to create an elaborate border and a gently
strewn effect in the center. This neckerchief, which
is quite characteristic of a very popolar type , was
block printed in 1795.
