The
original of this scarf is a cloth from India painted and printed using the
wooden block method. The indiennes played a major role in the origins of
European textile printing. The first known indiennes were probably
brought to Europe in the 15th century. However it was only from the
17th century that a growing fashion for light and highly coloured
cottons took hold of Europe. Very graphic with delicate colours, these motifs
are also characterised by their two dimensional representations without
perspective. "Jaipur" is the reproduction of an indienne, composed of 11
colours and representative of these exotic settings. It comes from the East
coast of the Indian peninsular and probably dates from the beginning of the 19th
century.
