Amarine
From 1800 to 1840,
Alsacian calico printing was primarily geared to
producing what were called "mouchoirs châles" square
or rectangular cloths which could be worn as
neckerchiefs, kerchiefs or shawls mostly decorated
with floral patterns. Throghout the 19th century,
the taste for floraland foliage-based designs
remained strong. Although realistically rendered,
19th century flowers were always taken out of their
natural context. Patterns could be mixed and matched
to follow the trends of the day. The designs also
had to take into account the way in which fashion
didacted they were worn : shawls and neckerchiefs
were usually folded along the diagonal. This fold
was emphasised by the small bouquets in two of the
corners of the shawl. amarine is the re-issue of one
of the many Alsatian floral print shawls. It was
block printed on cotton in 1830.
